rosa-parkRosa Parks is famous throughout the country for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a city bus in Alabama in 1955. Rosa was a seamstress at the time and was a member of the largely African-American community in Montgomery, Alabama. During the time she grew up, the city was governed by segregation laws. These laws stated that blacks were allowed to attend only certain schools; they could drink from only from specified water fountains and even borrow books only from the library allotted to them.

The African Americans were getting fed up with the various laws that kept treating them as second class citizens. This was when a young leader Rev.Dr.Martin Luther King Jr was rising in popularity among the African American community. Segregation laws had become such an integral part of life that every citizen in Montgomery knew that the back seats of a Montgomery bus for the black citizen and the front seats were reserved for the white citizens. There was also a custom where the bus driver had authority to ask a black citizen to give up their seat for a white citizen.

rosa-park-storySo on that fateful day in 1955, Rosa Parks was commuting home from after a long day at work when the driver asked the people sitting in the first row “coloured” section of the bus to stand as a white citizen did not have a seat in the white section of the bus. While the other black people complied with the bus driver’s order, Rosa Parks was not willing to do so. She was tired of relinquishing her rights in every sphere of life just because she was an African-American. This resulted in police officers appearing at the stopped bus and placing Parks in custody.

This incident helped to initiate the civil rights movement in the United States. A bus boycott was held on the day of Rosa Park’s trial. Parks become the national symbol of the struggle against racial segregation that lasted for the next half-century.

better-place1Communication skills
To be able to work actively for a good cause in society, you should be able to communicate your ideas and thoughts well. People should understand what you are saying and comprehend your meaning. There should be a good level of understanding among everyone. It is a good idea to attend training classes in communication. Though it may seem unnecessary, such classes will help you to get tips on how to communicate effectively.

A good cause
You should have an objective. Find which cause you are going to work on. You should not just go into society and start initiatives for many projects to help the needy. When you start, first determine a good cause. It may be to provide study materials to needy students or provide shelter for homeless kids etc. However small your objective may feel, try starting with only that one cause. Work hard for that cause and earn the trust of the society.

One successful project is always much better than many unfinished projects. Find what you can do to help the society in the best way possible. Do not try to start meaningless initiatives which you lose interest in after some time.

Remember that people, emotions and their lives are involved in whatever you start. Never give people hope and snatch it away from them.

masalaWhen you are determined to gain something, nothing at all can stop you. In spite of a hundred of hurdles and obstacles, you will achieve what you desire when you set your mind honestly towards this cause. This is exactly what Malala Yousafzai has shown the world. At a young age of only 17years, this Pakistani girl won the Nobel Peace prize just because she dared to stand up and speak for her right to education.

A short look into the life of Malala

Born in Pakistan, Malala lives in a place called Mingora, which was a great spot for tourists. However, their happiness turned into a tragedy as Taliban forces took over the town. Girls were denied a right to study and go to school. Malala used to attend a school that belonged to her father. She made a public speech in 2008 September asking why the Taliban was taking away the girls ‘right to education. This provoked the Taliban and eventually they raised a threat to her life. Hoping that Taliban wouldn’t hurt her as she was a kid, she continued going to school. She also started blogging for BBC regarding her right to education.

malala-yousafzaiThough she did this with an undercover name, ultimately she was exposed. However one fatal day, she was brutally shot in the school bus. She was given expert treatment in Pakistan as well as in London. On her return, she did not give up her activities. She peacefully continued speaking for her rights. Not only did she speak for herself, but she also spoke for all the girls in Pakistan who were subject to the pressures from Taliban.

Impressed with her bravery and efforts, many awards have reached her. For Taliban, Malala is always a threat. It is surely not an easy task for a young girl like her to stand against Taliban. However, at such a young age, she has understood the value of a good education. She has also written an autobiography in which we can read the actual struggles she had to undergo, the pressure her family had to face, her dreams and aspirations.

We should be proud to know such a brave girl like Malala. Let’s hope she sees the light at the end of her long lasting struggle.

Although there have been many groups working for the uplift of this community, most of them have been targeted by the male population. Very few issues faced by black girls and women have gained the attention of the public. They have been suffering for a long time and still are going unnoticed.

pandoraThe discrimination and harassment start at a very early age for black girls. Being separated for naturally belongs to the Black community, these girls have to face a struggle to achieve anything at all. Even in schools, whatever the reason, black girls are always targeted.
