Making Bromley South railway station accessible to everyone by 2012.
Bromley South is the 49th busiest railway station in the country with an annual footfall of over 6 million passengers. Located in London Travelcard Zone 5, it is a major interchange for thousands of commuters.
However, if you have difficulty moving around or using stairs, if you have a pushchair or are carrying heavy shopping, you may find the station extremely difficult or even impossible to use. This is because the platforms are accessible only by flights of steps. And there is no way a wheelchair user could gain access to the platforms.
Under the Government’s Access for All scheme Bromley South is due for accessibility work to begin between 2012 and 2015. This just isn’t soon enough! With limited accessibility at other nearby stations, many Bromley residents are stranded, unable to reach the many attractions the capital offers – despite London Victoria being less than 11 miles away. It also limits people in their choice of work as they simply cannot make what should be a relatively simple commute. Given the current financial climate, putting further barriers in the way of disabled people to find employment is simply unacceptable.
This time scale also makes a mockery of Mayor Boris Johnson’s pledge to make London transport accessible to all prior to the Olympic and Paralympics Games in 2012.
And to add insult to injury, of the 92 stations given priority for accessibility improvements before 2012, only 6 have a higher annual footfall than Bromley South
Access All Areas: Bromley South are a group of campaigners who want to see action taken to improve the facilities at Bromley South station ahead of the planned schedule and ensure the station is fully accessible by 2012. Many of the group have physical disabilities and feel that they are being unfairly disadvantaged by not having an accessible station close by. But the group recognise that this is a problem for ALL of Bromley’s residents and local businesses that goes far beyond disability. All people in Bromley and visitors to The Glades Shopping Centre would benefit from better station facilities and easier access to the platforms.
We, the undersigned, call upon the Department for Transport to recognise the urgent need for Bromley South railway station, the 49th busiest station in the country, to be made fully accessible to all people with temporary or permanent mobility impairments. We call for Bromley South station to be moved up into trenche 2 of the Access for All scheme to be made fully accessible by 2012 and in time for the Olympics and Paralympics games.
