LATEST ACTION - Say No to Nuclear Dump
22nd of June 2012
Radiation Free Lakeland and Save Our Lake District - Don't Dump Cumbria! have been campaigning hard against council plans to bury high level radioactive waste underground in West Cumbria, whose geology has been proven to be unstable and not safe enough to harbour these toxic wastes. Responding to a slightly dubious poll commisioned by MRWS (the government body tasked with finding places in the UK to store nuclear waste), a new petition has been launched (full details below). Please sign the petition and forward to your friends. You can also include your own comment along with your signature.
To Whom it May Concern,
The world is being told that the UK has a solution to the nuclear waste problem.
The proposal is to bury hot radioactive waste in Lakeland's leaky geology in a hole(s) 1000m deep by 25km square.
This is called Managing Radioactive Waste Safely and there is a timetable for first burial of waste deep under Lakeland by 2029.
The world is being told that a telephone poll shows Cumbrians are willing volunteers for this "solution" to the nuclear waste problem.
A majority of Cumbrian Parish and Town Councils have voted NO to the Dump. We the undersigned agree and say end this process now.
You can sign the petition here.
Friends of the Lake District's Flora of the Fells project is looking for volunteers to take part in their two major volunteering events - ‘Fell Care Days' - this autumn. The Fell Care Days - at Ullswater on Thursday 27 September, and at Windermere on Thursday 25 October, will highlight the huge role that volunteering plays in looking after and managing the fells. To register your interest please contact Sue Manson or ring 01539 733187. Or click here for more information.
Hi everyone, just to let you all know it may be a bit quiet around here for a bit (but don't worry, we'll be back!). After 2 years with Friends of the Earth it's time for me to move on. Thank you so much to all of you who have supported us during that time. Things will be back to normal soon enough, so watch this space! - Amy
