Leeds Friends of the Earth and Friends are campaigning to make our local and national food chains more sustainable. It's a key time for the campaign as we want to get the support of Parliamentary candidates.
Dear
I am writing to show my support for the Friends of the Earth Fix the Food Chain campaign. I have been shocked to find out about the hidden chain linking intensive meat and dairy production in the UK to global climate change and loss of biodiversity. Forests in South America are being destroyed to grow high-protein soy crops used to feed our chickens, pigs and cows.
Nationally the campaign has had extraordinary success since its parliamentary launch last year, with 259 MPs signing Early Day Motion 845 calling on Government to:
• Reduce the impact of the meat and dairy industry
• Shift subsidies to support planet friendly farming
• Help farmers to grow their own animal feed
We also had 205 signatures on our more recent EDM 194: Deforestation, Climate Change and Livestock
After the election the campaign will seek to secure a new law to reduce the environmental impacts of meat and dairy production, via a Ballot Bill based on the EDM.
I urge you to consider supporting such a Bill should you be elected.
Please help make 2010 the year the UK takes real action to fix the food chain and promote planet-friendly farming.
